Should have know there was a paradox for this, as it has always thrown me for a loop.
The paradox of tolerance was described by Karl Popper in 1945. The paradox states that if a society is tolerant without limit, their ability to be tolerant will eventually be seized or destroyed by the intolerant. Popper came to the seemingly paradoxical conclusion that in order to maintain a tolerant society, the society must be intolerant of intolerance.
There’s a fine balance between freedom of speech, liberty, justice, and tolerance. I am glad tech companies are finally taking this seriously and targeting groups that wish to limit these values for large segments of society.
Popper summed up this challenge best:
“While an intolerant sect does not itself have title to complain of intolerance, its freedom should be restricted only when the tolerant sincerely and with reason believe that their own security and that of the institutions of liberty are in danger.”
